Ypres Trip

"On Friday the 4th of October, year eleven history students were given the opportunity to go to Ypres in Belgium. This was a fantastic yet sobering opportunity for us to and grasp the sheer scale of the losses on both sides of the war. It also relates to the forthcoming GCSE history topic on WWI and the Third Battle of Ypres. Although the trip involved a 4am wake-up and around four hours of journeying, we were able to visit multiple memorial sites, pay our respects and also visit the ‘In Flanders Fields’ museum. The experience also involved a short look around a re-creation of the trenches (fitted out with mud and all!) which helped us to gauge the conditions that the soldiers would have had to live through. It also enabled us to better understand the geographical and topographical influences on the Ypres Salient during the war. Overall the trip was an extremely enjoyable yet also eye opening experience; thank you to Mr Trafford for organising this for all of us, and for the other staff for putting in a 16 hour day for our benefit!"
