U14 Kent 7's Festival

Mr Benwell: I am delighted to say that the Under 14’s won the Kent 7’s Festival yesterday at Dartford Grammar School in the Shield competition. You may or may not be aware that there are two tiers to Kent Rugby the Cup competition which most of the private schools and traditional grammar rugby schools play in and then the shield which sees a mixture of smaller private schools, grammar and comprehensive schools.

The competition has a pool groups, with the winners and runners up of each group progressing to the knock out stages. Within our pool group we faced strong opposition in comparison to other pool group, and faced a stern challenge in our very first game against Bennett Memorial Church of England School from Tonbridge (if you know the sport of rugby there are really no bad schools from the Tonbridge area at Rugby). Despite being 3 tries up with a few minutes remaining, Bennett managed to get the ball twice to their pace man who basically ran around our whole team and scored twice. With a conversion in injury time Bennett managed to secure the win. This then meant that we had to win our remaining pool matches to qualify for the knock out stages. The boys showed incredible spirit and commitment within their remaining matches to secure the runner up position behind Bennett and go into the knock out stages.

In the semi-final, we again faced the winners of the other group, Hurstmere School who we had beaten in the 15 a side Kent final before Christmas. The side again managed to step up their performance by isolating the Hurstmere runners and capitalising on turnovers and quick handling to take the win and reach the final. In the other semi-final, Bennett Memorial overpowered their opponents, and this naturally meant that the final would be a replay of our very first game. However, the boys had learnt their lesson and again exhibited a textbook performance of power running and commitment in the tackle deservedly taking the win and receiving the accolade of Kent 7’s Shield Winners.

This now means that the under 14’s have won both the 15 a side competition and 7 a side competition in the same year
