Remembering Josh and Sam: Race for Life (Monday 16th July 2018)

This year at The Norton Knatchbull School, we have been devastated to have had two students who sadly lost their battle with cancer.

We are fund raising for Cancer Research UK, to commemorate Josh Wilkinson and Sam Fournillier.  Josh was in Year 8 and died in September 2017, after a long battle with Ewings Sarcoma (a rare form of bone cancer).  Sam was in Year 13 and died relatively suddenly in January 2018 after battling with an aggressive form of leukaemia.

The driving force for this event is Freddie Newing, a year 8 student who is himself a survivor from acute myeloid leukaemia.  Cancer affects so many lives.  Many students, parents and staff will have been affected in some way.  We hope you can join with Freddie and the school, in doing our bit in the battle to beat cancer.

We are planning to stage a ‘Race for Life’ event on Monday 16th July.  We are hoping that our ‘Race for Life’ isn’t like a normal run round the school field.  We intend to make this an event to remember.  We would like it to be a challenging 2 miles (4 laps of the main field) with a number of surprise hurdles along the way.

We are calling out to any parents or local companies who might be able to sponsor an obstacle.  This could be a mountain of hay bales to clamber over, a swamp of cargo netting to clamber under or some other challenge that anyone puts forward.  It would need to be safe and very robust, able to cope with hundreds of participants.  If you think you can help, please get in touch.

Watch out for future messages regarding participation and sponsorship opportunities.  The event will be open to students in years 7, 8 & 9 during the school day.  Years 10 & 12 are on Work Experience at this time, and Years 11 & 13 will have finished their GCSEs and A’ levels by this time, but we would love for them to come back after school that day to take part. Parents would also be welcome to take part after school on the day.
