John Downton Awards

The NKS art department are incredibly proud to announce that the work of six students were accepted into the John Downton Awards this year.

This is a prestigious competition which is open to all schools and colleges across Kent. The John Downton Awards were first  organised in 2000 at the request of Miss Hilda Downton - sister of the celebrated Kentish artist, poet and philosopher, to recognise the achievements of the young artists of Kent in the fields of painting and drawing.

This year’s  exhibition takes place in the County Gallery, County Hall, Maidstone, from 22 October 2018 to   2 January 2019.  At the awards ceremony on 15th November we discovered that Oscar Goodsell had won the A level Painting Award and Lewis Spooner received the A Level Drawing prize.  In addition to this they gave a special award to Sam Fournillier, an amazing artist who tragically lost his battle with cancer earlier this year.  They also gave a donation to the Teenage Cancer Trust a charity chosen by Sam’s family. All  three of these boys will now form part of a selection of the works that  will be taken  from Maidstone to be shown at Turner Contemporary from 12 January – 24 February 2019.
